When the DEA shut down its dummy corporation operation codenamed SWORDFISH in 1986, they had generated $400 million which they let sit around; fifteen years of compound interest has swelled it to $9.5 billion. A covert counter-terrorist unit called Black Cell, headed by the duplicitious and suave Gabriel Shear, wants the money to help finance their raise-the-stakes vengeance war against international terrorism, but it's all locked away behind super-encryption. He brings in convicted hacker Stanley Jobson, who only wants to see his daughter Holly again but can't afford the legal fees, to slice into the government mainframes and get the money. In this futuristic technology spy movie, John Travolta plays Gabriel Shear, a man who is desperately trying to access information that is locked inside a complicated computer system that contains mountains of government secrets - and money. He hires Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman), a desperate computer expert, to help him hack into the system. The first 5 minutes are the film. The movie is 1 hour of boredom, 20 minutes of breaking glass, 30 seconds of titillation(I know - bad pun)and the rest is in the trailers. The plot is unique enough and borrows very little from other movies, but perhaps it should have. John Travolta has played the role of sociopath 3 times, and he did it better in Broken Arrow. Vinnie Jones is menacing as always, however is under utilised severely and had better lines in Gone in 60 Seconds. Hugh Jackman play's his character with the right amount of fear and confusion. However this may simply because he can't believe he found himself in this film. Halle Berry's only purpose in the film is to provide the 30 seconds of gratuitous nudity. This movie certainly could have been great, however it got lost in it's own pretensions. See this movie for the first 5 minutes. Even though the film claims to be filled with things that "are not what they seem to be", Swordfish is exactly what it seems to be. The movie is filled with less than subtle hints to what the ending will be, and the plot couldn't really keep me in the movie. John Travolta played the same bad guy that he always plays (cold-blooded murder type with a weird sense of humor that only really he understands). On the otherhand, both Hugh Jackman and Don Cheadle did a wonderful job. Jackman is actually believable as the hacker/dad that is just doing what he has to do to get is kid back from her junkie mom and porn king stepdad. Cheadle is once again good in the cop supporting role that he played in "Traffic". Given his recent success in supporting roles, perhaps he should be offered a lead role someday. Halle Berry was good in her role as well, but I believe her nude scene (which got a cheer from every guy in the crowd, me included) was just in the movie to get all of us guys to pay $8.50 to see Halle Berry's breasts. Well, it worked, but the movie really didn't offer much else except for special effects. I give it a 6/10. The cinema of morons made by morons for morons, Swordfish is everything you expect but worse.
